Description
The Reinke 16M SAMBU is an impressive representative of the popular aluminum bluewater cruising yachts – built for safety, self-sufficiency, and capable of handling demanding cruising grounds. With an LOA of 17.60 m, a displacement of approx. 26 tons, and asymmetrical bilge keels, she offers outstanding stability and can even take the ground.
The hull was built at Yachtwerft Benjamins in Emden, while the interior fit-out and comprehensive technical systems were professionally completed in 2003 by specialists and the first owner. The result is a yacht of noticeably higher quality than many typical owner-finished Reinkes. Full construction plans and documentation are available, as well as VAT-relevant invoices for hull, engines, and rig, among others.
She is powered by two Yanmar diesel engines (55 hp each), with new shaft drives (2024), fitted with VarioProp feathering propellers, a powerful 17 hp hydraulic bow thruster, and a total of 1,000 liters of fuel capacity. A robust hydraulic system operates the anchor windlass, bow thruster, hydraulic generator, and main bilge pump. The heavy-duty autopilot runs on a dedicated hydraulic system.
Her sail plan includes a fully battened mainsail, plus genoa and jib on furlers. The current (third) owner has carefully maintained the yacht and made significant improvements: new hull and deckhouse windows, a solid walkable hardtop, fixed sprayhood windows, and a new hull paint finish give SAMBU a distinctive presence with a comparatively sportier look.
A well-maintained Reinke of this size and with this equipment is rare on the market – a yacht for sailors looking for a robust, technically sophisticated, and self-sufficient home at sea.
Below decks, SAMBU offers high-quality joinery in solid wood, ample storage, and a thoughtful layout. She features three cabins: two forward, plus the spacious owner’s aft cabin with a large double berth, wardrobes, and a private seating area. An ensuite head connects directly to the engine room under the cockpit, where the majority of the yacht’s technical systems are neatly installed and easily accessible for maintenance.
The true deck saloon provides excellent comfort and a panoramic view, even when seated. Steering from inside via autopilot adds comfort and safety in heavy weather. The large galley is almost a separate room, with remarkable space, an additional seating area, and a full-size fridge/freezer.
Forward is the spacious guest cabin with a V-berth double, while to starboard lies a second guest cabin with a narrower berth – sufficient for two if only short-term. A second head is located aft of this cabin, also to starboard.
Technically, SAMBU is fully equipped for extended passagemaking: 1,500 liters of freshwater, an 820 Ah lithium battery bank (2023), solar array with 1,300 Wp, hydraulic generator, washing machine, infrared heating panels, and a complete navigation and communications suite including Starlink internet. An extensive stock of tools and spare parts remains on board.
Inside, SAMBU presents in well-maintained condition with only minor wear, fully acceptable for her age. Outside, the paintwork and some deck corrosion spots would benefit from attention, and a new set of sails in the near future would noticeably enhance performance.
For those seeking a true “workhorse” uncompromisingly built for bluewater cruising and even extreme sailing grounds, this is a rare opportunity.
SAMBU is lying in Izola, Slovenia, and available for inspection by appointment. The owner is selling due to a change in personal and family circumstances but offers close handover support so the new owner can become familiar with the vessel.
